Sports Fields
McKee Farms Park is a large park featuring many sports fields and courts, a pond, a playground, pathways, and a splash pad. It is also a popular location for free outdoor concerts in the summer and festivals such as Fitchburg Days.
A unique aspect of this park is the inclusion of an inclusive playground for kids with physical or sight impairments. Located next to the splash pad, this is the third of its kind in Dane County.
The park also features a multi-use shelter, bicycle/pedestrian path system (over a mile long), large parking areas (152 car capacity), two softball diamonds, seven soccer fields, one full-court basketball, three play equipment areas (including Kids Crossing), six lighted tennis courts, two sand volleyball courts, an area for seasonal ice skating, benches/memorial benches and landscaping.
With over 730 acres of parks, trails, recreation facilities & natural areas, Fitchburg has something for everyone. From the Badger State & Capitol City bike trails to a variety of fitness centers, farmer’s markets, outdoor concerts, and festivals, it’s easy to see why so many people love to call Fitchburg home.
Shelters
Located at 2930 Chapel Valley Road, McKee Farms Park offers both an outdoor pavilion and an indoor shelter that can be rented to accommodate up to 150 people. The outdoor shelter is surrounded by grounds that can support even larger groups.
There is also a playground at McKee Farms Park that includes an inclusive play area. This is the third such playground in Dane County and provides an opportunity for children with physical or sight limitations to interact with other kids in their community.
In addition to the play equipment, the park also has basketball courts, a reservable shelter, restrooms, and a bicycle/pedestrian path system. In the winter, the park offers ice skating and snowshoeing trails.
Fitchburg’s newest park features a reservable shelter, drinking fountain, restrooms, picnic tables, playgrounds, soccer fields, softball diamonds, volleyball, and a sledding hill. The park is managed for fish and wildlife habitat and is perfect for biking on the Capital City Trail or hiking. A great place to also visit is Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
Picnic Areas
If you’re a fan of outdoor activities, McKee Farms Park is the place to be. With a variety of sports fields, a splash pad, and numerous trails for hiking or biking, there is something for everyone.
For those looking to take a break, there is also a sledding hill and a small dog park. The park also houses the newest addition to Fitchburg’s parks system – an inclusive playground, the third of its kind in Dane County.
This large, tree-lined park also has a number of other amenities including a splash pad, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, and a full basketball court. There are also several picnic shelters and a gazebo for larger gatherings. The best part is that this park is only a quick stroll from New Fountains. For those that want to spend the day outside, you’re just minutes from Lake Mendota, Wisconsin’s largest natural lake and the perfect spot for fishing, paddle boarding, or kayaking!
Trails
Whether you’re taking a stroll, biking, or running, you’ll find a wide variety of trails at McKee Farms Park. With a large number of sports fields, courts, pathways, and a pond, this is a great spot to bring the family for fun in the sun.
If you’re looking for something more strenuous, you can explore the Swan Creek Greenways. This 4.5-mile trail loops through wetlands and woodlands, giving you a chance to see a variety of wildlife.
Bike share is also available in Fitchburg, making it easy to explore the area on two wheels. BCycle stations are located throughout the city and provide electric-assist bikes for riders of all ages and abilities. Next article.
