Korth County Park

5 Reasons to Visit Korth County Park in Rock Lake, Wisconsin

There are many reasons to visit the 89-acre Korth County Park, which borders Rock Lake. The park features a scenic hill for sledding and running/walking trails. Trails connect to the nearby Glacial Drumlin trail in winter. There are restrooms and a park pavilion for rental during the warmer months. Port-a-potties are available for use at other times. A trail map can be found online. Discover More about Wisconsin here…

Korth County Park

Located on the shores of Rock Lake, Korth County Park is an 89-acre gem of the region. You can enjoy its sweeping views and relax in its picnic area or on a packed limestone bike trail. In the winter, you can try your hand at cross-country skiing on the groomed trails or ice-skating on the lake. If you’re traveling by car, the park has two entrances: County Road S and County Road V.

Friends group

The Friends group at the beautiful Korth Park in Rock Lake, Wisconsin, is making a difference in the park and its surroundings. This nonprofit group is completing a series of projects at the park, including the completion of the Korth Pavilion. They have also completed fundraising efforts to improve the resources at the nearby Dorothy Carnes County Park. They have also raised money for habitat work at the park, including restoring the old oak savanna.

Osprey

The Osprey at Korth Park in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, has been spotted more than once. Local resident Mike Orcutt has witnessed the bird more than once and has attempted to place a nesting platform near the Rock Lake. He has been in contact with Jefferson County Parks Department and Rock Lake Improvement Association officials to help him find the chick. Ospreys are an endangered species, and removing them from the endangered species list in Wisconsin would help them regain their numbers. Click for more…

Brew with a View

If you’re in the mood for a brew, you can’t go wrong with Brew with a View in Lake Mills, Wisconsin. This beer and music festival, which raises funds for the Jefferson County Park System and its partner, Rock River Trail Initiative, is held on the lake’s shoreline. At Brew with a View, live music is offered by local bands, food vendors, and beer and wine tastings. The location is near a mowed trail system and a gravel path that winds around the lake. For those looking for some solitude, the park’s wildlife is an awesome option, too.

Osprey nests

To understand the nature of an osprey nest, you must first understand what an osprey is. These birds are migratory raptors that need a nest site that is relatively open and has a wide base. Nest sites are often built on treetops or on crotches between branches. They can even nest on human-made platforms. Although most nests are constructed of sticks and other natural materials, there are also artificial ones built in the park.

Restoration of oak savanna

In the suburbs of Chicago, oak savanna restoration has become a prominent activity. In northwestern Ohio, extensive restoration is taking place in the Oak Openings Region. And in Wisconsin, the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is undertaking oak savanna restoration in Korth Park. But what exactly does oak savanna restoration involve? What can be done to help protect and restore these ecosystems?

Tall grass prairies

The tallgrass prairie is a distinctive ecosystem of central North America. Its primary features include periodic disturbances caused by natural and anthropogenic fire, and large mammals that grazed on its tallgrass. These disturbances limited tree encroachment and helped to recycle soil nutrients. Originally, tallgrass prairies extended from the transitional ecotones of eastern North America out to southern central Canada. Continue reading about Wisconsin…
