James Madison Park was officially named in 1963, after the President of the United States. Before then, Madison didn’t have any public facilities named after him, so the city purchased the remaining lakeshore between Butler Street and Lincoln School. Federal aid provided the city with the funding needed to purchase the property. The park also houses the Bernard-Hoover Boathouse, which dates back to 1915. Charles Bernard had originally built a boathouse on the site in 1855. After the Great Depression, the Bernard-Hoover Boathouse was operated by Harry Hoover until 1968.
Another popular destination in Madison is Owen Conservation Park. This park is located on the western side of Madison and offers 3.4 miles of hiking trails. Nearby, you can find Westmorland Park, which features a rock garden, a large playground, tennis courts, and a softball field.
